Digital Games Guide: And Here's the News

Writer's picture: David ThrasherDavid Thrasher

Why It Matters:

This is game is a way to get your group engaged in a different format, and can even be used in a way that gives you a check-in on the pulse of how your group is doing yet allowing them to share in a unique way.

How to Play:

This game is one that can be played out in multiple ways, to be more silly or more serious. Essentially each member of your group is a news anchor and covers a brief story as the "expert" in their field. For a larger audience, consider breaking it up to just having a few people participate (asking for volunteers, one from each grade, 2 guys and 2 girls, etc.). If your group is more small group-driven, consider having a competition on which group can come up with the best video. The task is simple, to report the news today from your house with your best news anchor impression, anything from the weather to the local sports expert, even the resident video game expert to what you did today as simple as folding laundry to creating a new art project, etc.. When one person finishes, they then "turn it over to (insert the name of the leader/next student)" The idea is that they are not reporting actual news from a news station but news from their life as a way of catching up in a fun unique way. This game works especially well on zoom as each participant can call on another person on the call until everyone has gone, or the few you have selected. For those utilizing services that students aren't on video, consider having them send in a brief (20-30 second video that you can then share with the group (probably after vetting the videos) :)

Spiritual Connection:

*Note: While essentially every game can lead to some incredible spiritual connections, not every game needs to. Sometimes just the fun of the game or opportunities for connections can be more than enough that can then lead to those deeper truths throughout the time together.

This game can lead to conversations regarding how students are able to find hope in the Lord in the midst of whatever life's circumstances hold. This can also lead to conversations regarding the gospel, the Good News and how that truly is the greatest story ever told.

We would love to know the ways you have been able to use this! What worked? What didn't work? Share your photos with us using #notjustgames and #gamingfromadistance
