Why it Matters:
During these crazy times it seems like everything has moved digital out of necessity. The question has been how do we still engage one another and interact? In interacting with your small groups, staff, and ministry groups, we at Not Just Games want to equip you to utilize games digitally in a way that can lead to deeper engagement, richer connections for community, and valuable conversations in discipleship.
Today's game is a way for the group to get to know one another. These are done in a way that can be either set up for a large group or a small group to get further interactions and can be tailored in a way that aligns with your philosophy of ministry (i.e. typically having a ministry night where the hope is for everyone to interact, or having a ministry night that is encouraging more to small groups) as well as the digital format you're engaging in (group text, video chat, group call, social media, etc.). It can be lighthearted and silly or transition more to in-depth and serious, just depending on the needs of your group.
How to Play:
The leader of the group starts out with demonstrating the format- "Hi, my name is _______ and I'm awesome; you can be awesome too if (insert a thing you've done, something you like, an action to do, etc.)" Then everybody in the group who that applies to or everyone in the group that is does that action will comment (either by text or by saying, "I'm awesome too!" Then the leader randomly selects who is the next person that is "it." Depending on your virtual context, this can be done by selecting the first/last person to say something/text something, or can be done by rolling dice on video, or using a number generator. So then whatever number is selected, for example, five, would be the fifth person to comment. They would then be able to say aloud or over text the same prompt for themselves of a next thing they've done, something they like, an action to do, etc. and then the process repeats.
Spiritual Connections
*Note: While essentially every game can lead to some incredible spiritual connections, not every game needs to. Sometimes just the fun of the game or opportunities for connections can be more than enough that can then lead to those deeper truths throughout the time together.
Depending on your desired outcomes, there are certainly opportunities within this game to go a little deeper with the prompts by guiding the group along the way to then start saying things that have been fears or worries, how they've used this time to grow closer to the Lord, doubts they have, etc.
